Feel The Benefits All Day

Ongoma provides a drum for each participant, the West-African "Djembe", known for their superior sound quality. The facilitator would introduce participants to the instrument and lead them through the first steps of playing their drums.

Next, the group will be taught to play a typical African beat played by the core drummers - the so-called ‘djembe’. The facilitator will now show participants how to accompany the core drummers by playing a solo part to the basic djembe beat. The solo part is in essence a very simple but well-sounding rhythm added to the basic beat. The group will be split into groups, and each group will given an opportunity to play the solo.

Volunteers from the groups can display their virtuosity by coming forward and presenting the solo on their own, if they so wish. Tambourines and shakers will be distributed to individual members in the group, and are encouraged to dance and shake their instruments in the centre of the semi-circle to a beat provided by the core drummers. The individuals then pass their instruments to other members of the participants, who in turn come forward and display their "gusto" for the African rhythm.

Participants will also have an opportunity to rest their hands and listen to African songs sung and performed by the core drummers, like Shosholoza, Malaika, the Namibian National Anthem and more.

Drumming workshops can be dove tailed with team building seminars incorporating elements of strategy planning, communication skills and goal oriented focus.

Duration 1 - 2 hours.
