Drumming

Research has shown that drumming induces an alpha brainwave state, which is associated with stress release, mental clarity, focus, enhanced productivity and creativity, and the ability to process information more effectively.

    Performance Drumming:
Two or more Drummers can be hired for private or public performance shows at venues chosen by the client. Ongoma have extensive experience with public performances and can tailor-make a show to suit the needs of the client. These include receptions, parties, functions, prize giving's and many more.

Ongoma has over the years established a reputation for being able to lend just the right note to any official function. The marimbas, horns and shakers accompanied by the rich African songs remind everybody that this is Africa.

    Drumming Circles:
Participation based drumming circles are organized at various venues around Windhoek and advertised in the press. Currently we perform every second Saturday at Dylan's in Klein Windhoek from 9pm.

Core drummers present the drumming sessions. Participants can bring their own drum, but genuine Djembe drums can be hired at a nominal fee and full bar facilities are available.

Ongoma drumming circles can be facilitated at any venue in Namibia. Feel free to contact us for a comprehensive quotation.

    Interactive Drumming Circles:
Ongoma provides a drum for each participant, the West-African "Djembe", known for their superior sound quality. The facilitator will introduce participants to the instrument and lead them through the first steps of playing their drums.

Next, the group will be taught to play a typical African beat played by the core drummers - the so-called djembe. The facilitator will now show participants how to accompany the core drummers by playing a solo part to the basic djembe beat. The solo part is in essence a very simple but well-sounding rhythm added to the basic beat. The group will be split into groups, and each group will be given an opportunity to play the solo.

Volunteers from the groups can display their virtuosity by coming forward and presenting the solo on their own, if they so wish. Tambourines and shakers will be distributed to individual members in the group, and are encouraged to dance and shake their instruments in the centre of the semi-circle to a beat provided by the core drummers. The individuals then pass their instruments to other members of the participants, who in turn come forward and display their "gusto" for the African rhythm.

Participants will also have an opportunity to rest their hands and listen to African songs sung and performed by the core drummers, like Shosholoza, Malaika, the Namibian National Anthem and more.

Drumming workshops can be dovetailed with team building seminars incorporating elements of strategy planning, communication skills and goal oriented focus.

    Duration 1 - 2 hours.
