In 2002 Desmond approached Volker with the request to please assist them with re-skinning their broken djembe, and Ongoma,
'The Drum', was born. By paying off their first 30 workshop drums, Volker, Desmond and Ponti set off spreading their message
of beats, rhythm and tempo.
Soon they were joined by the others and with the ever increasing demand started performing for numerous functions and receptions
around the country, all the time extending their repertoire of African traditional and contemporary songs while also starting
to work on their own melodies.
Today, Ongoma have established themselves as an integral part of the Namibian Musical Landscape unique African traditional
sound fused with a modern approach to the African lifestyle. Their success has given rise to the growth of the band into a
company, with a wide variety of bands and products, each representing the original Ongoma philosophy "it is the vehicle to
express ourselves and feed our families. Our destination is to take our rightful position on the world stage."
